Job Description

Mastercard powers economies and empowers people in over 200 countries and territories through secure, innovative payment technologies. As part of the Business Operations team, the Site Reliability Engineer I helps ensure the reliability, scalability, and operational excellence of systems that support Mastercard's global payment platform.

This role focuses on production readiness, automation, monitoring, operational excellence, and continuous improvement while working closely with development teams to build resilient, highly available applications.

Key Responsibilities

Site Reliability & Operations

  • Support day-to-day production operations and system maintenance activities
  • Monitor application and infrastructure health to ensure high availability
  • Assist with deployment, operational readiness, and production support
  • Troubleshoot system issues and escalate complex incidents when necessary

Observability & Monitoring

  • Implement and enhance monitoring, logging, and tracing solutions
  • Collect and analyze operational metrics to improve system reliability
  • Support proactive incident detection and service improvements

Automation & Scripting

  • Develop automation scripts to simplify operational tasks
  • Identify opportunities to automate repetitive processes
  • Support operational tooling using Python, Bash, Go, or similar scripting languages

Cloud & Infrastructure

  • Support cloud-based infrastructure running on AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • Assist with Linux/Unix system administration and infrastructure management
  • Help maintain scalable, secure, and highly available environments

DevOps & Reliability Engineering

  • Support CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation
  • Contribute to containerized application environments and orchestration platforms
  • Assist with capacity planning, performance tuning, and reliability improvements

Incident Management

  • Participate in incident response, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis
  • Support change, problem, and incident management activities
  • Contribute to post-incident reviews and continuous improvement initiatives

Collaboration

  • Work closely with software engineers throughout the development lifecycle
  • Participate in knowledge-sharing sessions and technical discussions
  • Learn operational best practices from senior Site Reliability Engineers

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field
  • Understanding of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles
  • Knowledge of observability concepts including metrics, logs, and distributed tracing
  • Basic programming or scripting experience with Python, Go, Bash, or similar languages
  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix system administration
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals and common protocols
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, or other container technologies is preferred
  • Basic understanding of infrastructure scalability, high availability, and fault tolerance
  • Familiarity with troubleshooting production systems and incident management
  • Understanding of capacity planning and performance optimization concepts
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in Agile and cross-functional teams
