Job Description

The University of Delaware’s Infrastructure & Architecture group is seeking a Jr. DevOps Engineer to support and enhance central network systems that serve the entire university. This role involves configuring, maintaining, and automating systems across a diverse environment of servers, routers, switches, Wi-Fi, and IoT devices. The position includes troubleshooting complex issues, supporting critical systems, and ensuring security and reliability across the infrastructure. The Jr. DevOps Engineer will report to the Lead Network Architect and participate in on-call rotation for essential system support.

Responsibilities

  • Configure and maintain network devices including switches, routers, Wi-Fi, and IoT systems.
  • Perform system maintenance, software installations, upgrades, and patches.
  • Develop automation scripts and tools to improve efficiency and monitoring.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve system and network issues, collaborating with IT teams when needed.
  • Write and maintain technical documentation and operational procedures.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning and execution.
  • Contribute to feasibility studies and evaluations of new hardware/software solutions.
  • Provide on-call support in rotation with other system programmers.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and IT staff on network operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience).
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong understanding of operating systems principles and programming experience.
  • Knowledge of IP networking protocols, LAN/WiFi administration, and secure environments.
  • Familiarity with network automation software and large-scale device configuration management.
  • Knowledge of data security, disaster recovery, and emerging IT technologies.
  • Ability to plan, implement, test, and troubleshoot hardware and software.
  • Strong communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in network automation frameworks (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or similar).
  • Exposure to datacenter environmental systems and IoT device management.
  • Hands-on experience with disaster recovery operations.
